Confession du jour

Jean Dubuffet, «Le supplice du téléphone», 1944, Metropolitan Museum of Art

Le téléphone sonne (ça arrive encore). L’Oreille tendue répond : «Oui.» On s’étonne, parfois.

Rex Stout :

«Yes ?» He has never answered a telephone right and never will (p. 43).

Flynn picked up the receiver of the ringing phone.
«Off with you now, Sergeant Whelan. Go do what you like best. Try to arrest someone.»
Into the phone, he said, «Hello ?»
«Flynn ?»
«Flynn it is», said Flynn, settling into his deep desk chair. «Francis Xavier, as my mother would have it.»
«Jesus Christ, don’t you even know how to answer a phone ?
«I think I do», said Flynn. «You pick up the lighter of the two parts of the instrument, the one on top, stick one end against the ear, bring the other end close to the mouth, and make an anticipatory noise into it, politely if possible. Have I got it right ?»
«You should identify yourself. Crisply.»
«You mean, I should answer saying, “Inspector Flynn here” ?»
«Right !»
«But if you don’t know whom you’re calling», Flynn said, «why should I give you the satisfaction of telling you to whom you’re talking ? Answer me that, now»
(p. 82).

Dans le New York Times du 22 juillet, Jennifer Szalai rendait compte de l’ouvrage Because Internet. Understanding the New Rules of Language de Gretchen McCulloch (2019).

But the phone itself was once a profoundly disruptive technology for the English language (and presumably for other languages, too, though this book’s focus is English). As McCulloch explains in one of many illuminating historical anecdotes, simply settling on a standard greeting made for acute confusion. What initially started as a battle between «ahoy» and «hello» (another contender was «what is wanted ?» — my new phone greeting) was eventually resolved in favor of «hello»; the word has the same origins as «holler,» and was used at the time as a call for attention.

Remplacer «Oui» par «Vous voulez quoi ?» («what is wanted ?») ?

Go.»
