L’Oreille tendue relit ces jours-ci plusieurs livres de Nicholson Baker, dont The Anthologist (2009). Un poème du narrateur de Baker prend un sens particulier pour elle aujourd’hui.
I walked upstairs behind her
Staring at her stitched seams
Normally she wore black pants
But it was the last day of the year
That she could wear the white ones
So she did (p. 196)
Pourquoi est-ce le dernier jour de l’année pour porter un pantalon blanc («But it was the last day of the year / That she could wear the white ones») ? C’est qu’il ne faudrait jamais, dit la sagesse populaire, porter de blanc après la fête du Travail («Don’t wear white after Labor Day»).
La fête du Travail, c’est aujourd’hui.
